Elk City to Make History with First-Ever Closed Cruise During Route 66 Fest 2026

The Penny News 1403

Elk City, OK — Route 66 enthusiasts, classic car lovers, and festivalgoers will have the opportunity to witness a piece of Elk City history during Route 66 Fest 2026 as the city hosts its first-ever Closed Cruise on Main Street.

For the first time in the festival's history, a designated section of downtown Elk City will be shut down exclusively for registered cruisers, creating a unique experience that organizers say will showcase classic vehicles in a safer and more organized environment while giving spectators an unforgettable evening along historic Route 66.

The closed cruise is scheduled for Saturday, June 13, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Roads along the cruise route will begin closing at 7:30 p.m., giving spectators time to find viewing locations and set up lawn chairs before the vehicles begin rolling.

The evening will be divided into two cruise sessions. From 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., only vehicles from 1978 and older will be allowed on the route, providing a dedicated showcase for vintage classics. From 9 p.m. to 10 p.m., vehicles of all model years will be welcomed to participate.

Unlike a traditional open cruise, participation in the Saturday evening event requires registration. Organizers say non-registered vehicles will be directed to park and enjoy the event as spectators.

Cruisers can register at the Car Show on Saturday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. or on the east side of Mountain Man's from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday evening. All participants will enter the cruise route at 7th Street and Main Street.

While Saturday's event will be a controlled, registered cruise, organizers are also reminding visitors that the traditional Open Cruise returns Friday night, June 12. The open cruise will begin with a special photo opportunity at the National Route 66 Museum at 7:30 p.m., followed by a police-escorted first lap through town.

The Closed Cruise is just one of many attractions planned for Route 66 Fest 2026, which will take place June 12 and 13 as Elk City celebrates multiple historic milestones, including the Route 66 Centennial.

Festival activities include live music from Tyler Wilhelm and country music headliner Frankie Ballard, a Saturday car show, the Midwest SPL Audio Contest, a barbecue cook-off, food trucks and vendors, inflatable attractions, park activities at Ackley Park and the Elk City Pool, Art in the Park, the Paint the Route Art Show, free museum admission, and family-friendly entertainment throughout the weekend.

Organizers say the addition of the Closed Cruise represents another step in the continued growth of Route 66 Fest and offers visitors a chance to experience Route 66 culture in a way never before seen in Elk City.

With two cruise nights, live entertainment, classic vehicles, food, family activities, and Route 66 history, Route 66 Fest 2026 is shaping up to be one of the largest celebrations Elk City has hosted as the Mother Road approaches its 100th anniversary.
