Sayre, OK – An Elk City man was arrested Oct. 28 after a motorcycle pursuit that began in Sayre and continued into Harmon County, with speeds reaching approximately 120 mph, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Beckham County District Court.
Terrill John Morning, 25 at the time of his arrest, was taken into custody at approximately 2:11 a.m. on State Highway 9 near County Road 1800. A judge found probable cause for his arrest and set bond at $100,000 on Oct. 29, according to correspondence included with the affidavit.
The pursuit began around 1:40 a.m. after a Sayre police officer reported seeing a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed on Route 66. A nearby Beckham County deputy subsequently reported clocking the motorcycle at 63 mph in a posted 35 mph zone on Fourth Street.
According to the affidavit, the deputy activated his emergency lights and siren, but the motorcycle accelerated to more than 100 mph as it entered a 25 mph zone. The rider allegedly ran a red light at Fourth and Main streets and swerved into the oncoming lane.
The pursuit continued south from Sayre along area highways. The pursuing deputy reported speeds ranging from approximately 100 to 120 mph during portions of the chase. Authorities in neighboring counties were notified, and a Greer County deputy joined after the motorcycle turned west onto State Highway 9.
At one point, the rider slowed and raised his hands before accelerating again, the affidavit states. Deputies also reported the motorcycle swerving across both lanes.
The pursuit ended approximately 31 minutes after it began, when a Beckham County deputy drove ahead of the slowing motorcycle and forced it to stop. Deputies removed the rider from the motorcycle and restrained him, according to the affidavit.
A deputy reported smelling alcohol on Morning, who allegedly acknowledged consuming too much alcohol. The affidavit also describes him as stumbling and unsteady on his feet. The deputy did not conduct field sobriety tests, citing concern for Morning’s safety.
A records check showed Morning’s Oklahoma driver’s license was suspended, according to the affidavit.
The affidavit lists anticipated offenses including aggravated driving under the influence, eluding a police officer in a manner endangering another person, reckless driving and speeding.
The allegations have not been proven in court. Morning is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
