Beckham County, OK – 25-year-old man was arrested Oct. 26 after an alleged high-speed pursuit on Interstate 40 in Beckham County ended with his vehicle overturning.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed Oct. 28, Zachary David Roehr was driving a gray Toyota Corolla eastbound when an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper clocked the vehicle at 110 mph in a posted 75 mph zone.
The affidavit states the trooper activated emergency lights near mile marker 16, then used a siren when the driver showed no signs of stopping. The pursuit began about 9:50 a.m.
Roehr allegedly continued traveling at approximately 110 mph while making hand gestures out the window. During the pursuit, the Corolla nearly rear-ended a truck, missing it by only a few feet, according to the affidavit.
The trooper reported that Roehr then moved into the right lane behind two vehicles and forced them onto the shoulder, despite the left lane being open.
Near mile marker 20, the trooper used a tactical vehicle intervention to stop the Corolla. The vehicle left the roadway and overturned onto its roof.
According to the affidavit, Roehr had climbed out before the trooper approached and was the vehicle’s only occupant. He was taken into custody about 9:55 a.m.
Roehr said he was not hurt but complained of debris in his eye. Emergency medical personnel examined him and flushed the eye.
The trooper reported smelling alcohol on Roehr’s breath and person. According to the affidavit, Roehr acknowledged drinking in the car before the pursuit. The trooper also described his speech and behavior as erratic and reported that his pupils were dilated.
Roehr agreed to a blood test and was transported to Great Plains Regional Medical Center in Elk City, where blood samples were collected.
After being medically cleared, Roehr was booked into the Beckham County Jail. The affidavit lists alleged offenses of felony attempting to elude a peace officer while endangering another person, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, and speeding 31 to 35 mph over the limit.
A judge found probable cause for the arrest Oct. 27 and set bond at $50,000.
The allegations have not been proven in court. Roehr is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
