SWOSU Student Charged as Court Probes Death

Ada, OK – Court proceedings are underway in the case of a Southwestern Oklahoma State University student who was found dead near Veterans Lake in Sulphur last month.

According to court documents, Cameron Lewis, a SWOSU student and classmate of 18–year–old freshman Logan Musil, was the last person to see Musil alive. Investigators say Lewis told them he watched Musil take his last breath before leaving his body in a wooded area near the lake.

Lewis is charged with one felony count of abuse of a corpse and appeared Wednesday in Chickasaw Nation District Court. His attorney said in court that Lewis plans to plead not guilty to the charge. He is scheduled to return to court on February 4.

Until that hearing, Lewis is free on bond with an ankle monitor. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says the case remains open and is still being investigated for potentially more charges.

Details about what investigators believe happened the night Musil died were outlined in a federal search warrant released in October. According to that warrant, agents questioned Lewis after Musil’s gaming chair and keyboard were found in Lewis’s dorm room. Investigators say Lewis first told them he met Musil on campus, drove him to his home in Purcell on Sept. 12, and then dropped him at a residence in Edmond, but they said his story changed several times.

OSBI agents wrote that Lewis was reluctant to hand over his phone. Data from the device led investigators to a wooded area near Veterans Lake in Sulphur, where Musil’s body was later found. According to the warrant, Lewis told agents he and Musil had taken mushrooms and got into a physical fight. Lewis reportedly said Musil fell on a rock, was knocked unconscious, and that he panicked and moved the body into the woods after hearing Musil take his last breath.

Investigators also seized an SUV they believe was used to transport the body, according to the warrant. Lewis told agents he threw Musil’s cellphone into the lake.

SWOSU Police asked the OSBI to investigate on Oct. 5 after Musil was reported missing the night of Sept. 30. On Oct. 8, OSBI, the Murray County Sheriff’s Office, Chickasaw Lighthorse Police, and the National Park Service searched near Veterans Lake and found a deceased adult male. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner identified the victim as Musil. Lewis was arrested Oct. 9 in Weatherford and booked into the Custer County Jail.

OSBI officials say the case remains active, and authorities have stressed that the abuse of a corpse charge is not the final word on what Lewis could ultimately face as investigators and federal prosecutors review the evidence. Lewis is presumed innocent of all charges unless and until he is proven guilty in court.
