Two women found safe in Kiowa County after multi-agency search

Kiowa County, OK – Beckham County deputies helped locate two women who became lost in Kiowa County during last week’s first cold snap, according to Sheriff Derek Manning.

Manning said Kiowa County requested assistance after family reported the travelers, driving from Indiana to Texas, had gone missing and at least one woman was believed to have Alzheimer’s. “My dispatch captain received a call for assistance from Kiowa County… they wanted her to try to ping a couple of phones,” Manning said.

Dispatchers were able to obtain a phone ping, but the devices had not activated “for a day or two,” which raised concern, he said. Beckham County also sent a drone and pilot to assist the search.

They finally located the vehicle and the ladies were well and unharmed, about two miles from where our dispatch captain pinged the phones,” Manning said, praising Kiowa County’s persistence. He added that cold weather, a reported fall, and dead phones heightened worry about hypothermia.

The vehicle was found in the lake area of Kiowa County, Manning said. “Good work on everybody involved… the sheriff down there did a great job staying after it and wasn’t going to give up until he found these ladies.”
