Kiowa County Pursuit Ends After 45-Mile Chase, Suspect Arrested

Hobart, OK – A 45-mile pursuit through Kiowa County ended with the arrest of a suspect after authorities said the driver refused to stop for a traffic stop, traveled through fields and residential streets, and ultimately collided with a Kiowa County Sheriff’s deputy’s vehicle.

According to the Kiowa County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began at approximately 2:59 p.m. on Monday, June 29, when Hobart police officers attempted to stop a driver near First Street and Hitchcock Avenue in Hobart. Officers reportedly knew the driver had a suspended license and believed there could be narcotics and a weapon inside the vehicle.

Instead of stopping, the suspect fled, leading officers on a pursuit through the northern part of Kiowa County toward the Sentinel area. Authorities said the driver attempted to evade law enforcement by traveling on back roads and driving through multiple fields before returning to Hobart.

The chase continued through several residential streets, including Main Street, then east on Iris Street and across U.S. Highway 183. Authorities said the suspect then turned south onto County Road 2259, where the pursuit ended after the vehicle collided with a Kiowa County deputy’s patrol vehicle at the intersection of County Roads 2250 and Ozark Trail.

The suspect was taken into custody without further incident. Both the deputy and the suspect were evaluated by EMS at the scene. The suspect was later transported to the Kiowa County Detention Center.

Sheriff Joe Janz said the pursuit covered approximately 45 miles and that the suspect showed “no regard to people’s safety” during the incident.

Multiple agencies assisted in the pursuit, including the Hobart Police Department, Kiowa County Sheriff’s Office, Sentinel Police Department, Washita County Sheriff’s Office, and Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers from Troops H, M, and W.

Sheriff Janz praised the coordinated response, saying the cooperation between agencies helped bring the dangerous situation to an end without injuries to law enforcement officers, the public, or the suspect.
