Sayre, OK – Beckham County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officers recently attended the Oklahoma Association of School Resource Officers (OKASRO) Conference, joining law enforcement officers, educators and school administrators from across the state to discuss current school safety challenges and best practices.
School Resource Officers Joseph Coats and Richard Jones attended the conference alongside Erick Public Schools Principal Steven Whalen, where they participated in training sessions and collaborative discussions focused on enhancing school safety and preparedness.
Conference topics included legal updates affecting school safety, identifying child predator tactics and behaviors, recognizing grooming and inappropriate communication warning signs, extortion and emerging digital threats facing students, and prevention strategies related to nihilistic violence and school shooting prevention.
The conference also provided an opportunity for Beckham County Sheriff’s Office personnel and Erick school administrators to collaborate on future safety planning efforts and discuss ways to further strengthen existing security measures within their schools.
“Although our schools are inherently safe and have effective prevention and protocol measures in place, it remains essential to conduct tabletop discussions and continually evaluate potential concerns,” said Beckham County Sheriff Derek Manning.” The Beckham County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to exploring new approaches to school safety while expanding training opportunities, professional relationships and resources that enhance school security efforts.”
“School safety requires constant attention and preparation,” Manning added. “Training opportunities such as the OKASRO Conference allow us to stay informed on emerging issues, build relationships with other professionals and bring valuable knowledge back to our schools and communities. Our goal is to continue strengthening partnerships with educators while ensuring the safest possible environment for our students.”
