Weatherford, OK – Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) faculty and students from the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences recently shared the geological history of Oklahoma during a community presentation at the Weatherford Public Library. The presentation, titled “Fossils of Ancient Oklahoma,” welcomed community members of all ages.
The presentation featured Dr. Renan Bosque, Dr. Marcella Santos, Madi Crisp, Darby Elmore, and Eric Mesta. Attendees learned how fossils help scientists study ancient environments and better understand the history of life on Earth. The presentation also focused on Oklahoma’s changing landscapes through geological time, including ancient seas, changing climates, and extinct organisms preserved in the fossil record.
Community members had the opportunity to examine fossils from Oklahoma and other parts of the world during the event. Children and families also participated in hands-on activities and discussions about Earth history, extinction, evolution, and prehistoric life.
The outreach event provided SWOSU students with an opportunity to share scientific knowledge with the public while engaging with the local community outside the classroom. Events like this continue the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences’ involvement in science education and community outreach across western Oklahoma.
