Elk City, OK — A 67-year-old Utah man was injured early Monday morning following a single-vehicle crash involving a commercial motor vehicle on Interstate 40 in Beckham County, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred at approximately 2:02 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near the 29-mile marker. Troopers reported the driver was traveling east when the vehicle left the roadway to the left and struck a cable barrier about 125 feet west of the mile marker post, coming to rest roughly 270 feet east of the initial impact.
Beckham County Sheriff Derek Manning said initial indications suggest the driver may have fallen asleep or lost attention while driving.
“I just talked to the deputy, and he had just cleared the scene a little while ago. It happened about 2:30 this morning,” Manning said. “The truck ran off the edge of the road and rolled over onto its side in the center median.”
The driver, whose name has not been released pending notification of next of kin, was transported to Great Plains Regional Medical Center in Elk City with possible head injuries. Authorities said he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Plans were in place to transfer him to another facility for further treatment.
No other vehicles or passengers were involved.
Manning said the crash did not block traffic but required assistance from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation for traffic control while crews worked the scene.
“Crews were on scene for quite a while working to clear the truck from the median and get everything out of the roadway,” he said. “The roadway is now clear and traffic is flowing.”
The crash was initially reported as westbound, but deputies later confirmed it occurred in the eastbound lanes.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
