Clinton, OK — A man died Friday in a self-inflicted shooting at the Clinton High School football field, authorities said.
The Clinton Police Department confirmed the incident occurred around noon at the Tornado Bowl. Officials said the adult male was not a current student, employee or otherwise affiliated with Clinton Public Schools.
Police described the shooting as an isolated incident and said there was no ongoing threat to students or staff. The investigation remains ongoing.
Clinton Public Schools reported that both the high school and middle school were placed on lockdown as a precaution while law enforcement responded.
“All students and staff are safe, and there is no immediate danger,” the district said in a statement. “This measure is being taken out of an abundance of caution while the situation is being addressed.”
Superintendent Nathan Meget said the incident began as a medical emergency on the football field involving an adult not employed by the district.
“Despite response efforts, the individual passed away,” Meget said in a statement. “We want you to know that no students or staff were involved or harmed, and there was no threat to the safety of our school community.”
Meget said classes would dismiss as scheduled Friday afternoon, though evening soccer games were postponed until Monday.
He added that counselors will be available for students and staff who may need support following the incident.
“While this incident did not involve our students, we recognize that an incident like this can cause worry, fear and concern,” Meget said. “Our priority is always the safety, health and well-being of our students and staff.”
Officials said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
