Weatherford, OK – A Weatherford woman has been charged with two felony counts of animal cruelty after authorities reported finding two dogs in severely neglected condition in rural Custer County.
According to court records filed in Custer County District Court, Ragan Ann Bone is accused of willfully neglecting two dogs by failing to provide necessary food, water and veterinary care.
The charges stem from an incident reported Feb. 22 after authorities received information that the resident of a rural property east of Weatherford had moved away several months earlier and may have abandoned several dogs at the location.
When authorities arrived, three dogs were observed on the property. One ran away upon arrival while two remained on site.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the dogs appeared severely malnourished, with visible ribs, hips and spinal structure consistent with prolonged lack of adequate nutrition.
One of the dogs was found with numerous porcupine quills embedded in its face, head and leg, which appeared to have been present for an extended period. The areas around the quills appeared infected, and the dog was described as weak and limping.
The second dog was described as severely emaciated and suffering from a serious untreated eye condition that appeared chronic and possibly causing vision impairment.
Authorities reported no food or water bowls were visible on the property at the time.
Due to the condition of the animals, the two dogs were taken into custody and transferred to animal control. A local animal rescue volunteer later retrieved the animals, and one of the dogs was taken to a veterinarian for treatment.
According to the affidavit, Bone was contacted by phone the following day and stated the dogs were being checked on daily and fed regularly. She also stated she personally checked on them twice per week.
However, another individual associated with the property later told authorities the dogs had only been checked on occasionally and had not received consistent care.
Investigators stated the condition of the animals was consistent with prolonged neglect and failure to provide necessary food and veterinary treatment, resulting in significant suffering.
Bone is charged with two counts of felony animal cruelty, each punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000 if convicted.
The case remains pending in Custer County District Court.
