Wheeler, TX – The Wheeler Volunteer Fire Department recently held its annual awards banquet, recognizing the dedication, sacrifice, and hard work of its firefighters over the past year.

The banquet honored countless hours of training, emergency response, and service to the community, highlighting individuals who consistently went above and beyond in their roles.

Firefighter of the Year was awarded to Chase Helton. This honor is given to a firefighter who shows outstanding leadership, commitment, selflessness, and unwavering dedication to both the department and the people it serves. Helton was recognized for answering the call at all hours and stepping up when it mattered most. His bravery and selfless actions during the 2024 Smokehouse Creek Fire gained national attention, earning him the nickname “Hollywood” among fellow firefighters. Department leaders noted that Helton is a tremendous asset to both the department and the community.

The Most Calls award went to Kade Kemp, recognizing exceptional commitment and availability. Kemp consistently answered the call and demonstrated reliability and dedication throughout the year.

Rookie of the Year was awarded to Jonathan Venzor. This honor is given to a first-year firefighter who shows a strong work ethic, eagerness to learn, and a solid commitment to the department. Venzor was praised for hitting the ground running and showing great promise for the future of the fire service.

The Wheeler Volunteer Fire Department congratulated all award recipients and expressed appreciation to every member for their continued service and sacrifice. Department leaders emphasized that the work they do would not be possible without the dedication of each firefighter who serves the community when help is needed most.
