Virginia Fugitive Couple Arrested in Elk City Following Standoff

The Penny News 71

A Virginia couple, wanted on multiple charges including firearm possession and fugitive escape, were apprehended in Elk City on October 17, following a tense standoff involving local law enforcement and Troopers with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The incident began after Elk City Police responded to a welfare call involving 33-year-old Karmella Bentley reported to be traveling 35-year-old Sidney Martin who allegedly threatened Bentley with a firearm. Authorities identified the fugitives’ vehicle — a black Dodge truck with Virginia plates — but were initially unable to locate it.

A tip led officers to a dark blue school bus with "Hurricane Help" painted on the side, parked at a convenience store on South Main Street in Elk City. After confirming Bentley and Martin's identities and Virginia - issued warrants, officers from multiple departments — including Elk City Police, Beckham County Sheriff’s deputies, and Oklahoma Highway Patrol—set up surveillance around the vehicle.

Shortly after, multiple authorities approached the bus. Following commands, Bentley surrendered first, followed by Martin after a brief struggle. Both were detained and transported to Beckham County Jail.

During a search of the bus, officers recovered five firearms, ammunition, and various drug paraphernalia. Bentley faces charges including possession of drug paraphernalia and fugitive escape, while Martin faces additional firearm possession charges due to his prior felony record.

This successful capture was credited to the coordinated efforts of local and state law enforcement.
