SWOSU Press Release

Greer County, OK – Students from Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences recently took part in a three-day field experience at Quartz Mountain State Park as part of the university’s Herpetology course. The trip provided students with the opportunity to conduct field surveys and closely observe native reptiles and amphibians in their natural habitats. The trip was part of a course taught by Dr. Renan Bosque, with additional guidance provided by Dr. Stuart Nielsen, a visiting herpetologist from Louisiana State University who co-led several portions of the fieldwork.

During the trip, students surveyed various habitats throughout the park and recorded native species of snakes, lizards, frogs, and other herpetofauna. The group explored a mix of trails, rocky outcrops, and even caves in search of specimens. Students practiced field identification techniques, observed key characteristics used for species classification, and received direct instruction on safe and ethical handling procedures. They also learned how to document their findings and apply museum curation practices, skills relevant to careers in biology, wildlife management, and conservation research.

Throughout the weekend, students worked in teams to locate, observe, and identify herpetofauna. Instructors used each encounter as a teaching moment, discussing everything from color variation and camouflage to habitat preferences and conservation concerns. For many participants, the experience helped solidify their interest in field biology and gave them a more realistic view of what scientific work looks like outside the classroom.

The Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences at SWOSU frequently incorporates field experiences into its curriculum to better prepare students for advanced study and careers in the natural sciences. Courses such as Herpetology provide both technical instruction and a broader understanding of biodiversity and species interactions in Oklahoma’s ecosystems.
