Oklahoma Legislature Passes HB 1732, Empowering Schools to Broadcast Their Own Athletic Events - Awaits Governor's Signature

Oklahoma City, OK — On April 30, 2025, the Oklahoma Legislature passed House Bill 1732, a measure that affirms the right of public schools to broadcast their own athletic events, including preseason, regular season, and playoff games. The bill, authored by Representative Anthony Moore (R-Clinton) and Senator Casey Murdock (R-Felt), received unanimous support in both the House and Senate and is now awaiting the governor's signature.

HB 1732 specifically prohibits the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) from entering into exclusive broadcasting agreements that would prevent local schools or broadcasters from airing games in which their teams participate. This provision ensures that schools and local media outlets retain the ability to share their athletic events with the community, regardless of broader OSSAA contracts.

The bill is set to take effect on July 1, 2025, and includes an emergency clause, highlighting its immediate importance for public interests. According to the Senate Fiscal Summary, the legislation is not expected to have any fiscal impact on the state budget.

The bill now heads to Governor Stitt's desk.
