First Baptist Church of Elk City Opens Shelter as Arctic Blast Approaches

The Penny News 446

Elk City, OK – With a bitter arctic front set to grip western Oklahoma this week, First Baptist Church of Elk City is stepping up to help those in need. From Tuesday, February 18, through Friday, February 21, the church will provide a heated shelter and hot meals for individuals without heat in their homes or those experiencing homelessness.

Forecasters predict a sharp drop in temperatures beginning Tuesday, with highs struggling to reach 20 degrees and overnight lows dipping below zero. Snow and strong winds will add to the dangerous conditions, making exposure to the elements potentially life-threatening.

Monday will be the last mild day before the cold sets in, with a high near 53 degrees before temperatures plummet overnight. By Tuesday, the arctic air will settle in, bringing strong winds, snow, and a high of only 19 degrees, followed by an overnight low of minus 2. Wednesday will be bitterly cold, with temperatures barely reaching 17 degrees during the day and falling to zero overnight. The frigid conditions will continue through Thursday, with a high of 26 degrees and a low of 9. Friday offers a slight warm-up, reaching 36 degrees, but nighttime temperatures will still hover around 20.

Community members are urged to spread the word to ensure that anyone in need is aware of this resource.

With such extreme conditions on the horizon, officials urge residents to take precautions. Staying indoors, dressing in warm layers, and checking on neighbors—especially the elderly—can help prevent cold-related illnesses.

For those needing shelter, First Baptist Church of Elk City welcomes all. For more information, call 580-225-7951 or visit fbcelk.com.
