Canton, OK – Water from Canton Lake is scheduled to be released later this month to help replenish Oklahoma City's drinking-water supply as drought and extreme heat continue to affect water resources across the state.

The release is currently scheduled to begin September 17 following a request from Oklahoma City and a recommendation from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which manages the dam at Canton Lake. The Oklahoma Water Resources Board voted on the city's request shortly before Labor Day weekend.

Once released, the water will travel approximately 100 miles down the North Canadian River before reaching Lake Hefner, one of Oklahoma City's primary drinking-water reservoirs.

Not all of the water released from Canton Lake is expected to make it to Oklahoma City. An estimated 30% to 40% could be lost during the trip through evaporation or by soaking into the riverbed and banks.

Canton Lake is already approximately 1.6 feet below its normal level. The Canton Lake Association estimates the upcoming release could lower the lake by another three feet, potentially leaving it about 4.6 feet below normal.

The release comes as drought, high temperatures and limited rainfall continue to put pressure on Oklahoma City's water supply. Lake Hefner has experienced declining water levels and accounts for roughly 40% of Oklahoma City's drinking-water storage.

The decision also raises concerns around Canton Lake, where lower water levels can affect boating, recreation, tourism and businesses that depend on lake activity.

Oklahoma City has turned to Canton Lake for additional water during previous dry periods. Similar releases occurred in 2013, 2022 and 2024.
