Kiowa County, OK – The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has confirmed the recovery of the body of 34-year-old India J. Norman of Roosevelt, who went missing following a kayaking accident at Tom Steed Lake.
According to OHP, Norman's body was recovered Thursday afternoon, October 29, near the Cold Spring area of the lake by Troop W Marine Enforcement troopers. The discovery followed a multi-day search involving several agencies.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday, October 24, approximately 1.4 miles west of the park side boat ramp and three-quarters of a mile north of the southern shoreline in Kiowa County.
According to the Highway Patrol's report, Norman was operating a Lifetime Pacer kayak westbound on the reservoir when a wave struck the left side of the vessel, throwing her into the water. Norman reportedly held onto the kayak for an undetermined amount of time before going underwater. She did not resurface.
Authorities said Norman had been kayaking with a friend in a separate kayak when both vessels capsized. Her friend was rescued the following morning, but Norman remained missing.
The Highway Patrol reported that no personal flotation devices were present or in use at the time of the incident.
Conditions at the time included clear skies, an outside temperature of 61 degrees and a water temperature of 66 degrees. The water depth at the reported accident location was approximately 11 feet.
OHP confirmed that Norman's family has been notified of the recovery.
