Elk City Hosts Fetching Animals

Elk City, OK – Dog days returned to the Elk City Convention Center.

The West Central Oklahoma All-Breed Kennel Club Dog Show was held there Aug. 27-30.

The annual event brings 750 to 1,000 dogs and their owners from several states to town.

“Because it lasts four days, is so well attended, and uses so much of the Convention Center, the dog show is our biggest yearly event,” said Convention Center Director Julie Brewer.

The 4-day affair features 350 to 500 entries per day, and each owner may enter several dogs in various categories in this American Kennel Club-affiliated competition.

The Convention Center is ideal for this kind of event. Its main hall and back room include 23,000 square feet of space for the more than 50 events that it hosts every year, including the dog show.

With 430 parking spaces and 75 RV hookups, there's plenty of parking for both same-day and overnight guests.

Because of the event's size and duration, the dog show requires extensive preparation.

"We start preparing for it three weeks in advance," Brewer said.

The annual dog show is normally held the weekend following Labor Day and Elk City's Rodeo of Champions, but the holiday fell later this year, so the dog show was held earlier than usual.
