Mangum, OK – A Missouri man injured in an accidental shooting during a turkey hunt in Greer County has died from his injuries.

Authorities say Dr. Juston Gates, of Missouri, was shot on April 16 while hunting with others near Mangum on the opening day of Oklahoma’s spring turkey season. Investigators with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation say the shooting was accidental.

Gates was airlifted to OU Health in Oklahoma City in critical condition following the incident. He died one week later.

Gates served as president of the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home. In a statement, a spokesperson said, “Dr. Gates went to be with the Lord with his family standing by his side. He was well known for his love of and obedient service to Jesus Christ. He had a deep love for his family, both his family at home as well as his MBCH family. Dr. Gates will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.”

The shooting remains under investigation by wildlife officials. No additional details about the circumstances leading up to the incident have been released.
