Two Arrested Following Oilfield Theft Investigation

The Penny News 1202

Dewey County, OK – On June 9, 2025, an Ovintiv Energy security consultant requested the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to investigate a theft of oilfield equipment.

After an internal investigation by the company, it was determined that an Ovintiv Energy contract employee had stolen the equipment. The company also determined the amount of equipment stolen and the estimated value.

During the investigation, Ovintiv reviewed invoices and found where a large amount of oilfield pipe was missing from drilling sites that were supervised by 48-year-old Clyde Thompson. The used pipe removed from wells should have been transported to a storage facility or moved to another drilling location, but no records were found for the transport of pipe.

Ovintiv records further indicated that the pipe was taken from drilling sites in Dewey, Blaine, Kingfisher, Canadian, Grady, McClain, Stephens, and Garvin Counties. OSBI special agents interviewed local farmers and a steel company, who Thompson had sold the oilfield pipe to. The OSBI determined that Thompson had sold approximately 2,000 joints of pipe.

OSBI special agents also discovered that most of the pipe missing from Ovintiv drilling sites was transported by a local trucking company, driven by 63-year-old Marvin Rogers. The OSBI interviewed Rogers, who admitted to falsifying load tickets when hauling equipment for Thompson. Invoices from the trucking company revealed that the transport of stolen pipe cost Ovintiv approximately $43,000 in transport costs. Rogers confirmed the locations where pipe was taken, based upon his review of the load tickets he had prepared.

Based on the information and evidence obtained during the investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for both Thompson and Rogers. Both suspects were charged with Larceny of Oilfield Equipment (In Excess of $15,000), Criminal Conspiracy, and Engaging in a Pattern of Criminal Offenses.

In March of 2026, both Thompson and Rogers turned themselves into the Dewey County Sheriff’s Office and were booked into the Dewey County Jail. This is still an ongoing investigation at this time.

The OSBI appreciates Ovintiv Energy and the Dewey County Sheriff’s Office for their continued assistance with this investigation.
