Merritt Bond Fails as Voters Decide School Measures and Local Races Across Western Oklahoma

The Penny News 1132

Western Oklahoma – Voters across western Oklahoma made decisions Tuesday on several school bond proposals and municipal races, with mixed results throughout the region.

The largest local headline came from Merritt Public Schools, where voters decisively rejected a $28.53 million dollar bond proposal. The measure failed with 484 votes against, 67.32 percent, and 235 votes in favor, 32.68 percent. A total of 719 ballots were cast. The proposal would have funded construction, equipment, repairs, remodeling of school buildings, and improvements to school sites.

In Weatherford, voters considered two separate bond propositions. Proposition No. 1, a little over $201 million dollar construction bond, was defeated with 1,545 no votes, 63.50 percent, to 888 yes votes, 36.50 percent.

Proposition No. 2, a $500,000 dollar transportation bond, received 1,233 yes votes, 50.45 percent, and 1,211 no votes, 49.55 percent. Although it earned a simple majority, Oklahoma school bonds require 60 percent approval to pass. As a result, Proposition No. 2 also failed.

Cordell Public Schools saw a different outcome. Voters in Washita County approved a $1.37 million dollar bond. The measure passed with 190 yes votes, 71.43 percent, compared to 76 no votes, 28.57 percent, out of 266 total ballots cast. The bond will fund construction, equipment, repairs, remodeling of school buildings, and improvements to school sites.

Municipal races were also decided Tuesday.

In Mangum, incumbent Mayor Mary Jane Scott secured another term in the unexpired mayoral race. Scott received 218 votes, 79.56 percent, defeating challenger Lisa Golden, who garnered 56 votes, 20.44 percent. A total of 274 ballots were cast in the race.

In the Town of Hydro, voters selected Jimmy Fickling to fill the unexpired term on the Board of Trustees. Fickling won with 56 votes, 55.45 percent, while Kirk Hartman received 45 votes, 44.55 percent. The race was decided by 11 votes, with 101 total ballots cast.
