SMALL SCHOOL STATE TOURNAMENTS FINISH

For the 60th and final time Jim Norick Arena, or the Big House as it’s affectionately called, hosted the small school state basketball tournaments this weekend. Class 2A joined A and B this year which led to a marathon day on Championship Saturday. It started with a Western Ok battle in the Class B girls title game. Hammon and Arnett played even for the first couple quarters before the Lady Warriors took off. Behind a Big House girls record 45 from henley West, Hammon pulled away from Arnett with a 59-33 win. Here’s what Henley had to say about the win....(1:37:00) It’s the 4th time Hammon has won a girls state title, 2nd in the last 3 years. The second game of the day was a rematch in 2A boys. Once again Dale hammered Pocola 60-20. The Pirates become the 8th boys team in history to win 4 straight state titles. The morning session finished up with the Class A Girls game between Caddo and Cyril. Neither school had ever won a gold ball coming into the matchup. It was the Cyril Lady Pirates that hoisted the trophy in the end courtesy of a 47-34 win. The evening session started with another highly anticipated rematch in Class B Boys between Calumet and Wilson (henryetta). It was tight through three quarters, but eventually #1 Calumet wore down the defending champs and romped their way to a 56-43 win. Brendan Voss had 15 points and 12 rebounds for Head Coach Jacob Mayfield’s Chieftains. It’s Calumet’s 5th gold ball, second for Jacob as the head coach. The most competitive game of the day was the 2A girls final between Ok Bible Academy and Hartshorne. OBA had one gold ball while Hartshorne was looking for the first state title in any sport. It came down to the end and it was OBA that held off Hartshorne 65-61. Conley Cayot led the Lady Trojans with 23 including making 6 of 7 from behind the arc. The final small school basketball game ever played in the Big House was the Class a Boys final between Okarche and Okay. The one followed a similar script to a few of the other games on Saturday. Close at halftime but Okarche was able to free themselves of the Mustangs and win 67-54. The Warriors won back to back titles and also became the 45th team all time to win a state title as an undefeated champion.

OU BEATS TEXAS

It was billed as a must win for both teams down in Austin on Saturday for the second installment of Red River hoops between Oklahoma and Texas. Both teams desperately needed another win for their ncaa tournament hopes. Both coaches needed a win to help with job security. In the end it was Oklahoma that found a way to hold off the Longhorns 76-72. The Sooners had 6 guys in double figures led by Brycen Goodine’s 14. It’s the first win for Porter Moser over Texas in his 4 years in Norman. They finish the regular season 19-12, 6-12 in the SEC. OU draws Georgia on Wednesday in the first round of the SEC Tournament in Nashville.

THUNDER ROLLS

The Ok City Thunder continued their winning ways with two home victories over the weekend. On Friday night they sat all their starters, but it didn’t matter in a 107-89 win over Portland. Yesterday was a battle of the top two teams in the WEstern Conf with Denver in town. It was a one point game with just over 10 minutes left when OKC blew Denver away. They outscored the Nuggets 41-20 in the 4th quarter en route to a 127-103 win. SGA had 40 and Jalen Williams chipped in with 26. Those two teams will play again tonight and you can hear it on 98.1fm and 1240 am. Pregame starts at 5:30 with the tip to come at 7.
