HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Week 5 of the high school football season came and went on Friday night all across the state of Oklahoma. In Class 4A District 1 action, Elk City went north on Highway 34 to face Woodward. The Elks were riding a four game win streak in the series, but it was obvious very early that streak would come to an end. Woodward scored early and often in a 63-14 win over the Elks. The Boomers scored touchdowns on the first 9 possessions to run away and hide from the Brown and White. Elk City fell to 0-5, 0-2 in the district while Woodward improved to 4-2, 1-1 in 4A 1. Elsewhere around the district, Wford held off Clinton in the Custer County Conflict 23-7. Bethany went to Cache and topped the Bulldogs 17-7. Wford and Bethany are out on top of the district at 2-0. Cache and Woodward are next with 1-1 records. Clinton and Douglass are both 0-1. Elk City’s in the cellar at 0-2.

Down in Class A-1 District 1, the Merritt Oilers welcomed the Hinton Comets in a game for both to scratch back into the playoff chase. Hinton got revenge from a 40-0 shellacking last year and returned the favor by shutting out the Oilers 28-0. Meritt falls to 2-3 overall, 0-2 in the district. Hinton won their first game this season with a 1-4 overall record, an even 1-1 in district 1. The other district 1 games shook out like this: Crescent topped Sayre 36-8, Tonkawa handled Hooker 48-21, and Fairview whipped up on Watonga 42-7. Crescent, Fairview, and Tonkawa lead the standings at 2-0. Hinton and Hooker are tied at 1-1. Merritt, Sayre, and Watonga are all tied at 0-2.
