The Penny News 459

Weatherford, OK – As the SWOSU Digital Commons is about to reach its nine-year anniversary, downloads for the entire collection have surpassed the two million mark for the institutional repository at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU). As of the end of January the repository has had international engagement from over 232 countries! Currently our digital collections house over 27,379 items, with more being added all the time. SWOSU Digital Commons can be located on the library’s website or directly at: https://dc.swosu.edu/.

Here are some quick facts about our collections:

  • 16,234 items, from SWOSU journals and publications, have been downloaded 901,246 times in 219 countries.

  • 751 works, from SWOSU Faculty and Student Research, have been downloaded 79,823 times in 148 countries.

  • 4,679 items, from SWOSU History and Productions, have been downloaded 103,613 times in 122 countries

  • 527 videos and audio recordings, from all SWOSU collections, have been streamed 5,329 times.

The Al Harris Library is constantly adding more special collections representing external education-oriented organizations. One of these special collections is the General Thomas P. Stafford Collection. The Stafford Archives houses the personal materials of General Stafford, a Weatherford native, during his time as a NASA astronaut and beyond. In fact, the repository’s current priority project is processing and uploading scans of over 2,500 photographs of his personal and professional life. To view the Stafford Collection materials, visit https://dc.swosu.edu/stafford/.

I am happy to announce that on January 2, 2025, the SWOSU Digital Commons exceeded 2,000,000 downloads of its 27,000+ items to 232 countries and regions internationally since 2016,” said Phillip Fitzsimmons, University Archivist and Special Collections Librarian at the Al Harris Library. “This is a particularly impressive achievement for a regional university. The numbers demonstrate that SWOSU makes significant and far-reaching contributions to many academic disciplines around the world.”

Al Harris Library serves the students, faculty and community of Southwestern Oklahoma State University. The library offers a wide range of services from databases, to reference assistance, group study rooms, a media studio and more.
