Sheriff’s Office Scam Targets Residents with Fake Warrants and Intimidation Tactics

The Penny News 418

Beckham County, OK – Scammers posing as law enforcement officers are targeting residents with a fraudulent scheme designed to trick victims into providing personal information or sending money. The scam, often conducted over the phone, involves criminals impersonating deputies and claiming the victim has an outstanding warrant, missed jury duty, or owes a fine. Using intimidation tactics, they pressure individuals into making immediate payments.

A key red flag: A legitimate sheriff’s office will never demand payment over the phone. Officials encourage anyone who receives such a call to hang up and contact their local sheriff’s office directly.

Common Tactics Used in the Scam

Caller ID Spoofing – Scammers manipulate caller ID to make it appear as though the call is coming from the local sheriff’s office.

Threats of Arrest – The caller claims the victim will be arrested immediately if they do not pay a fine.

Unusual Payment Methods – Victims are often instructed to pay using gift cards, wire transfers, or prepaid debit cards.

Using a Real Officer’s Name – Scammers sometimes use the names of actual deputies to make their claims seem more credible.

How to Protect Yourself

Never Provide Personal Information – Do not share Social Security numbers, bank details, or credit card information with anyone claiming to be from law enforcement over the phone.

Hang Up on Suspicious Calls – If a caller demands immediate payment or threatens arrest, end the conversation immediately.

Verify the Call – If you are unsure about a call’s legitimacy, hang up and contact your local sheriff’s office using an official phone number.

Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious calls to law enforcement. If you or someone you know has been targeted by this scam, contact your local sheriff’s office or the Federal Trade Commission to file a report.
