Beckham County, OK – A New York man was seriously injured Thursday afternoon following a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 40 in Beckham County.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 12:43 p.m. Thursday, November 5, near mile marker 26 in the westbound lanes of I-40.
Troopers reported that 61-year-old Raymond Merolle of Staten Island, New York, was traveling westbound in the outside lane when he made an unsafe lane change, colliding with a vehicle driven by 29-year-old David I. Cedillo of Hart, Texas, who was traveling in the inside lane.
Both vehicles left the roadway to the left and struck the cable barrier in the median. Cedillo’s vehicle traveled along the top of the barrier before crossing into the median on the eastbound side.
According to the OHP report, the trailer being pulled by Merolle’s vehicle detached, causing his vehicle to overturn approximately one-quarter turn and become tangled in the cable barrier.
Merolle sustained serious head injuries. The report indicated he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
Cedillo was not injured and was wearing a seat belt.
Neither vehicle had passengers, and no fatalities were reported.
