Weatherford, OK – Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) has received national recognition for its work preparing students to manage and protect the patient information that health care providers depend on. Its bachelor’s and master’s programs in Health Information Management (HIM) have both been named Programs of Distinction.
The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) accredited both programs with distinction on Aug. 10, 2026. Both received commendation, CAHIIM’s highest level of recognition. The programs are among a select group the organization identifies as examples of best practices in health care education.
Health information management offers a way to work in health care through an interest in technology, data and organization. Professionals in the field manage patient records, protect private information and help hospitals and medical practices keep information available for patient care. SWOSU offers coursework online at both degree levels, giving students flexibility to pursue these careers while balancing work and family responsibilities.
SWOSU earned the distinction through its early participation in CAHIIM’s Future Education Model. The model focuses on students demonstrating that they can apply what they learn. At SWOSU, that includes auditing hospital datasets containing errors and researching regulations to answer compliance questions. Participating programs also use input from students, faculty and employers to evaluate that preparation and share approaches other educators can use.
“The Future Education Model changed our entire teaching philosophy,” said Dr. Dana Lloyd, director of SWOSU’s master’s program in Health Information Management. “We rebuilt every course so students aren’t memorizing a textbook. They’re solving the real problems they’ll face on the job.”
Both programs combine practical coursework with individual guidance from faculty to help students prepare for work in health information management. Bachelor’s students prepare for responsibilities involving electronic health records and the management and protection of patient information. At the master’s level, students study areas such as health data analysis, privacy and security, health care leadership and information systems. Together, these programs give students opportunities to prepare for the field and pursue further education in managing health information and health care operations.
“I am so proud of our faculty, students, alumni, and all of the people who contribute to the success of our programs,” Lloyd said. “I am grateful to be part of a team that is committed to innovation, competency-based education, and preparing the next generation of HIM professionals.”
