Beckham County, OK — A series of burglaries at a former marijuana grow facility in Beckham County has led to multiple arrests, the recovery of stolen property and the discovery of illegal drugs, according to Beckham County Sheriff Derek Manning.
Manning said the property, which now serves as a residence rather than a grow operation, has become a repeated target for thieves because equipment and other valuable items remain on the premises.
The latest investigation began when the property owner contacted dispatch after his security cameras stopped working, something that had also occurred during a previous burglary.
Manning and the undersheriff approached the property on foot after finding the entrance gate secured. Once inside, they discovered that approximately five buildings, including the residence, had been broken into.
Investigators also found evidence suggesting the suspects intended to return and collect additional property.
Deputies established multiple layers of surveillance around the property and waited overnight. Shortly before 5 a.m., surveillance alerted authorities that someone had returned.
Deputies stopped one individual, which led them to another suspect. While officers were investigating and making arrests, additional vehicles arrived to pick up individuals involved in the incident.
Manning said one of those vehicles was a pickup that investigators suspected the driver was not authorized to use. Another pickup that arrived was determined to be stolen, and drugs were discovered inside.
The investigation continued with a search of a residence, where authorities discovered what Manning described as a trafficking quantity of methamphetamine and an amount of marijuana consistent with intent to distribute.
Investigators also recovered hundreds of packaged marijuana pre-rolls, which Manning said appeared to have been stolen from a processing facility. A stolen motorcycle and additional suspected stolen property were also located.
Authorities are also investigating a possible firearm violation involving a convicted felon.
Manning said the repeated burglaries at the property have resulted in approximately eight to 10 people being taken into custody over the past couple of months, along with the recovery of substantial amounts of stolen property.
Although investigators initially suspected the latest group might be connected to earlier burglaries, Manning said they appear to be largely separate groups.
"There may be some distant connection between them, but it was just a totally different group of people," Manning said.
According to Manning, word has apparently spread among individuals looking for items to steal that valuable equipment remains at the location.
"They just got word that there was stuff out there that you could get in there and take," Manning said.
The sheriff said his department continues working with the property owner to improve security and prevent additional burglaries.
"We'd like word to get around that we are watching that property," Manning said.
Despite the repeated criminal activity, Manning said the investigations have helped authorities recover stolen property, make arrests and develop leads in other cases.
"It has yielded some good results in the meantime," Manning said.
