Weatherford Man Charged After High-Speed ATV Pursuit

Weatherford, OK – A Weatherford man faces a felony charge after allegedly leading police on a high-speed pursuit through city streets and rural roads on an all-terrain vehicle.

Jordan Daniel Martinez, 20, was charged October 9 in Custer County District Court with endangering others while eluding or attempting to elude a police officer, a felony.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the incident began around 10 p.m. Wednesday, October 7, when Weatherford police spotted an ATV traveling westbound near the intersection of Seventh Street and West Main Street.

Officers reported that the ATV had no functioning taillights and appeared to be traveling well above the posted 35 mph speed limit.

As police attempted to catch up, the ATV allegedly passed a semi-truck pulling a trailer in a no-passing zone. Officers activated their emergency lights and siren as the vehicle continued southbound onto Highway 54.

The affidavit states that the ATV traveled at approximately 60 to 70 mph and passed a white sedan on the highway shoulder after crossing the Interstate 40 interchange.

The pursuit continued onto rural roads south of Weatherford, where the ATV reportedly reached speeds exceeding 60 mph on East 1035 Road before turning onto North 2385 Road.

According to the affidavit, Martinez eventually slowed near the intersection of North 2385 Road and East 1039 Road and attempted to turn around.

Officers ordered Martinez off the ATV, and he complied. The vehicle then rolled forward into a ditch.

When questioned about why he failed to stop, Martinez reportedly told officers he was scared and was trying to get home.

Police identified the vehicle as a 2006 Suzuki KFX400 ATV. Martinez was arrested and transported to the Weatherford City Jail.

The affidavit indicates Martinez had no prior criminal history.

Court documents also reference an allegation of operating an ATV on a roadway, although the formal charging document filed October 9 lists only the felony eluding charge.

Under Oklahoma law, the felony charge carries a possible punishment of up to five years in prison and a fine ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.

Bond was set at $2,500, according to court records.

The charge is an allegation, and Martinez is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
