Beckham County, OK – A Hinton man is facing multiple allegations following an investigation into a reported burglary at a rural Beckham County property near Erick.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Beckham County District Court, Steven Rhea Houchin II was arrested September 26 after investigators connected him to property allegedly taken from a residence and found inside a U-Haul truck. The affidavit lists anticipated charges including unauthorized use of a vehicle, conspiracy, possession of burglary tools and second-degree burglary.
The investigation began September 25 when authorities responded to a suspicious U-Haul box truck parked near the intersection of county roads N 1790 and E 1200. Investigators later encountered Houchin at the truck and reported finding property inside that allegedly belonged to the owners of a nearby residence.
Later that morning, authorities were notified about a separate property on E 1200 Road where an electric meter had reportedly been removed. Investigators said they found a gate with what appeared to be a cut lock, along with tire tracks and footprints on the property. According to the affidavit, investigators believed footprints at the scene matched footwear worn by Houchin and two other individuals who were being investigated.
Investigators then examined another nearby residence where a chain at the front gate had allegedly been cut. The property owner reported a Jeep Wrangler, computer monitor and rifle missing from the residence. Authorities later located the Jeep at a Sayre hotel.
According to the affidavit, security video from the residence showed Houchin and two other individuals walking around the property. Investigators alleged one recording showed Houchin moving a security camera in an apparent attempt to prevent it from recording the group.
During an interview with investigators, Houchin acknowledged being on the property and being captured on video near the residence. He also acknowledged driving the allegedly stolen Jeep but denied being the person who originally removed it from the property. Houchin denied cutting locks or tampering with electrical utilities.
The affidavit states Houchin initially denied handling a missing .243-caliber rifle but later told investigators he knew about the firearm and provided an approximate location where it had been discarded. Authorities subsequently recovered the rifle.
A probable cause determination was later made for Houchin's arrest, and bond was set at $60,000.
The allegations contained in a probable cause affidavit are not a determination of guilt. Houchin is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
