Elk City, OK – The Oklahoma Department of Transportation added a coat of white paint to some heavily-traveled asphalt on Route 66 in Elk City's northeast corner.
According to ODOT District 5 Engineer Will Snipes, the public asked for help in making the “Y” intersection around the curve just east of Van Buren at Country Club safer for motorists.
"We had gotten some concerns over the vehicles going south and turning east, and those going east and turning north having near misses," Snipes said.
So, ODOT painted two yield lines.
Since this road is an Interstate 40 Business Loop, ODOT has jurisdiction.
According to ODOT regulations provided by Snipes, "yield lines shall consist of a row of solid white isosceles triangles pointing toward approaching vehicles extending across approach lanes to indicate the point at which the yield is intended or required to be made."
Motorists who pull up to the points of the white triangles should yield to approaching traffic.
Snipes oversees maintenance and construction in the 11 counties that make up ODOT's District 5, including Beckham.
