Burns Flat, OK – The chief of the Burns Flat Police Department has been charged with two misdemeanor offenses following an investigation by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
Keith Allan Smith was charged Thursday, July 30, in Washita County District Court with one count of unlawful detention and one count of assault and battery. The charges stem from a traffic stop that occurred in May 2026 in Burns Flat.
According to the OSBI, the Washita County Sheriff's Office requested the agency conduct an independent investigation into the incident. After reviewing the OSBI's findings, the Washita County District Attorney's Office determined there was sufficient evidence to file the misdemeanor charges.
OSBI officials said Smith surrendered to authorities Thursday following the filing of the charges.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding what allegedly occurred during the traffic stop. The case remains pending in Washita County District Court.
Under the U.S. legal system, criminal charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
