Elk City, OK – It's a banner day for downtown Elk City.
Several new pole-mounted metal banners adorn Main Street's lamp posts between 3rd and 7th Streets, with more on the way.
"While they function similarly to traditional banners, these are designed to be more permanent, wind resistant, and longer lasting as an artistic streetscape feature," said Elk City Sports Marketing & Promotions Director Marnie Tosh.
Banners featuring an elk, the American flag, and the American Bison—Oklahoma's state mammal—have already been mounted on some of the new Main Street lamp posts.
Two additional designs—the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher and Black Swallowtail butterfly—are being custom painted by Shannon's Custom Paint and Body and will be installed when completed.
The Scissor-tailed Flycatcher is Oklahoma's state bird, and the Black Swallowtail is the state butterfly.
"Each design reflects a broader story of Elk City and Oklahoma’s heritage, as well as a sense of patriotic pride," Tosh said. "The goal was to create a cohesive, welcoming look that resonates with both residents and visitors."
Tosh researched design options, and she and City leadership and staff collaboratively made the final design decisions.
All of the banners were cut from A36 carbon steel by Jason Kos, owner of K4T Machine Shop.
Because of their durability, the powder-coated metal banners are designed to be displayed year round.
