Oklahoma City, OK – Two Washita County law enforcement officers were honored for their service and sacrifice during the 58th Annual Oklahoma Law Enforcement Memorial.
According to a post from the Washita County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy David Claude Hines and Detention Officer Steven Rozell were recognized during the ceremony. Both men will also be added to the National Law Enforcement Wall in Washington, D.C. during Police Week activities this year.
Deputy Hines became involved in a physical struggle with a mental patient inside the Washita County Jail on October 13, 1932. After gaining control of the man, Hines reportedly collapsed from the exertion. He later died from apoplexy brought on by the encounter.
Detention Officer Steven Rozell died on August 29, 2021, from complications related to COVID-19 after contracting the virus while working during the pandemic.
The Washita County Sheriff’s Office said both men are being remembered and honored for their dedication and service to the community.
